The Experiences That Helped Me Grow the Most
Growth isn’t always easy. It doesn’t arrive wrapped in comfort or convenience. It happens in the moments that stretch us, that push us past what we thought we could handle.
Looking back, three defining experiences have shaped who I am today—teaching me resilience, love, and the courage to build a life beyond borders.
1️⃣ Moving Abroad Alone – Starting Over in a New Country 🌍
There’s a moment, just before the plane takes off, when it hits you—you are leaving everything you’ve ever known behind.
Packing up my life and moving abroad alone was terrifying and exhilarating all at once. It meant:
✔ Saying goodbye to the familiarity of home.
✔ Stepping into a world where I had to build everything from scratch.
✔ Learning to navigate a new culture, new system, new everything—without a safety net.
At first, it was lonely. But then, it became empowering. I found my voice in classrooms filled with students from diverse backgrounds, teaching business, economics, and the skills that would shape the next generation. I realized that I wasn’t just building a career—I was building a life of my own design.
💡 Biggest Lesson: Courage isn’t about never feeling afraid—it’s about choosing to go forward anyway.
2️⃣ Mattewis & Lafienja – The Love I Didn’t Know I Needed 🐾
Some people find cats. Some cats find people.
And then there’s Mattewis, who didn’t just find me—he adopted me.
It was February 13th when a scrappy, tuxedo kitten marched into my life outside my school—tiny, sick, and refusing to take "no" for an answer. He was gravely ill, but he was a fighter. We fought together. Through sleepless nights, vet visits, and uncertainty, he survived.
And since I was a full-time teacher and he was a full-time patient, we compromised. I took him to school with me.
✔ He listened to lessons from my desk.
✔ He judged students from his cozy spot in the classroom.
✔ He became our tiny professor, the beloved mascot of our learning space.
Months later, when I adopted Lafienja, a blind rescue who had been abandoned, Mattewis became her guide—showing her where to eat, sleep, and trust again. Watching them together, I learned more about resilience, patience, and unconditional love than I ever expected.
💡 Biggest Lesson: Sometimes, the ones we save end up saving us.
3️⃣ Airplanes – The Bridge Between Love & Home ✈️
For some, airplanes are just a means of travel. For me, they are the threads that stitch my world together.
✔ They take me back to South Africa, to the home I left behind.
✔ They bring me to my family, across countries and time zones.
✔ They bring the love of my life back to me—because when you love a pilot, the sky is always part of your story.
Some love stories are written in letters. Mine is written in flight schedules and layovers. Some relationships thrive on daily routines—mine is built on reunions in airport terminals, in the quiet hum of jet engines bringing us home to each other.
💡 Biggest Lesson: Distance isn’t measured in miles—it’s measured in the effort we take to stay connected.
✨ Final Thoughts: Growth is in the Moments That Change Us
Growth doesn’t come from easy roads. It comes from the moments that test us, teach us, and transform us.
