Mattewis & Lafienja: A Love Story with Whiskers and Lessons
Mattewis & Lafienja: A Love Story with Whiskers and Lessons
Mattewis: The Cat Who Enrolled Himself in School
Some people find cats. Some cats find people. And then there's Mattewis—who didn’t just find me, he adopted me.
It was February 13th, and I was leaving school when this scrappy, black-and-white tuxedo kitten appeared out of nowhere, looking like he had fought one too many street battles. He was small, sick, and demanding immediate enrollment in my life. I tried to reason with him, but Mattewis had no interest in democracy—he had chosen me, and that was that.
It turned out he was gravely ill with pneumonia. Three vets looked at him and saw a lost cause. The fourth vet saw what I did—a fighter who deserved a chance. So we fought. Hard.
I became a full-time cat nurse, personal chef, and emotional support human. Nebulizers, medications, and sleepless nights followed. But here’s the thing about Mattewis—he was too stubborn to quit.
And since I was a full-time teacher, and he was a full-time patient, we found a compromise.
I took him to school with me during his recovery.
Picture this: A tiny, tuxedo kitten bundled in a blanket on my desk, judging my students, listening to lessons, and taking cat naps between lectures. Mattewis became the unofficial class mascot, with my students constantly asking,
"How’s the little professor doing today?"
And by the time he fully recovered? He wasn’t just Mamma’s Boy—he was also a very well-educated cat.
Lafienja: The Blind Princess Who Found Her Kingdom
By the time September 27th rolled around, Mattewis was thriving, but he needed a friend—someone to rule the kingdom with him.
Enter Lafienja, a delicate soul who had seen too much of the world's cruelty. She had been dumped at a stray feeding area, left to fend for herself after suffering severe abuse that left her permanently blind.
She was terrified. Skittish. She didn’t trust anyone.
So, I did what any cat lover would do—I brought her home.
For days, she hid in the bathroom, frozen in fear. Every sound startled her. Every movement made her flinch. But Mattewis had a master plan.
Slowly, he became her guide.
- He meowed instructions when she got lost.
- He showed her where the food and water bowls were.
- He let her follow his scent to the comfiest nap spots.
- And when she was too scared to explore? He waited patiently.
And then, one day, she stepped out of the bathroom—curious, trusting, following the sound of Mattewis’s purr.
Today, she is fearless. A champion napper. A professional at stealing my seat the second I get up. She may be blind, but she sees love, safety, and home more clearly than most ever will.
From the Kalahari to the Classroom (and the Cat Kingdom)
I grew up in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa, where the heat was relentless, the landscape was vast, and my love for animals was as natural as the red sand beneath my feet.
That love followed me across continents. Today, I am a teacher, a curriculum specialist, and a lifelong student of the universe—guided by the philosophy that every creature, big or small, has a story worth telling.
Mattewis and Lafienja are just two of mine.
And yes, they are in charge. I just pay the rent.
